Light up the Streets 2013 Lancaster City Centre

Light up the Streets

As part of the ‘Light up Lancaster festival 2013’ I helped out with the set up of ‘Light up the Streets’ on Friday November the 1st

I was taking part as an early careers artist assisting artists with the set up of their light themed work which was to be displayed in vacant shop windows around the town centre.

I spent the day with the artist Carol Hanson helping to set up her vintage tea room shop window installation, which was fantastic fun and a lot of hard work!

Her work was a mixture of card-board characters and set design with an animated back drop, which she also made.

As the lights went down at 6pm her window came alive and looked brilliant!

There was eight artists in total who were commissioned to create work for the shop windows; Elisa Artesero , Rachel Britch, Sue Flowers & Adam York Gregory, Carol Hanson, Ivan Liotich, Helen Schell and Anthony Ward.

Due to the short time scales I only got to work alongside one.

Light Up the Streets other events

A theatre company ‘Imitating the Dog’ had a huge installation/light work projected onto Lancaster’s Castle, which is at the heart of the city centre, this piece told a tale of the castle history of hanging through a story that was unfolding on the castles walls.

Other arts organisers including dance performers and musicians also took part in various locations.

The event was designed for the public to take an art trail around the city directed by TV screens displayed in shop windows giving information about the events and art happening around the city.

‘Light up the Streets’ was a part of the ‘Light up Lancaster’ festival which ran over four days starting with ‘Light up the Waterways’ and ending on ‘Light up the Skies’ (Firework display)

It was a great night and festival and something which Lancaster’s town needed. I am from Lancaster and live here too and it was great to take part with the arts in my home town which I have never done before and hope I can do again.

I have a few pictures of some of the shop windows but taken on my phone as the event started by the time we had finished our shop window and the take down was on the same night so there wasn’t long to get good quality pics
